Best places to visit Vietnam in May

May marks the shift from spring to summer in Vietnam. While temperatures rise and rainfall increases throughout the country, this month still offers plenty of sunny days and fewer tourists. Central and southern Vietnam enter a humid wet season, but northern regions like Hanoi provide a more temperate climate, perfect for outdoor activities.

Weather

As May progresses, rainfall becomes more likely as Vietnam moves into the hot wet season. Be sure to pack rain gear and insect repellent along with summer clothing.

In northern Vietnam, areas like Ha Giang start to see rain, but regions like Sapa and Mu Cang Chai remain mostly dry with temperatures averaging 68-76°F (20-24°C). The central coast, protected by the Truong Son Mountains, experiences less rain, making beaches like those between Hue and Nha Trang inviting with temperatures around 86°F (30°C).

In southern Vietnam, the Mekong Delta experiences hot and humid conditions, although May is slightly cooler than April. Rainfall can be heavy, particularly in the afternoons, but many dry periods occur as well.

Crowds & Costs

May generally sees fewer tourists than earlier months. You can enjoy the beaches and other attractions without the usual crowds. However, keep in mind that the April 30-May 2 holiday draws a large number of Vietnamese travelers, so major sites may be busier during that time.

Prices for tours and accommodations often drop in May, making it a good time for budget-conscious travelers. However, be prepared for an increase in mosquitoes with the onset of the wet season.

Where to Go

Early May is a good time to explore major cities like Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City, as many locals are away. These cities maintain an average temperature of around 84°F (29°C), making it comfortable for sightseeing, though rain is possible.

Central Vietnam offers beautiful beaches, particularly Nha Trang and Quy Nhon, where you can enjoy warm waters and fewer crowds. For a quieter experience, Lang Co Bay provides a serene crescent-shaped beach, and you can combine beach relaxation with visits to nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Hue and Hoi An.

In northern Vietnam, the terraced rice fields are vibrant and stunning during May, particularly in areas like Mu Cang Chai and Trang An.

What to Do

May is perfect for water sports in Nha Trang and other Central Vietnam resorts. Enjoy activities like kayaking, water-skiing, and scuba diving. Nha Trang is a great spot for beginners to obtain scuba-diving certification due to its calm waters.

Consider hiking in Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam’s oldest national park, known for its rich biodiversity and hilly trails. This is a wonderful place to spot wildlife, including rare primates at the park’s Endangered Primate Rescue Center. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes, use mosquito repellent, and stay hydrated with plenty of water.
