Vietnam Private Tours: How They Work
Vietnam private tours are trips built around one traveler, couple, family or group of friends. You have your own guide and your own driver. You choose the dates, the hotels and the pace. If you love a place, you stay longer. If it rains, you change the plan. That freedom is what turns sightseeing into a real travel experience.

Planning a private tour for late 2026 or 2027: what has changed
Checked by our team on October 16, 2026, from Vietnamese government sources.
- Record demand. Vietnam received more than 17.7 million international visitors from January to September 2026, up 14.5% on 2025. The peak season from October to March is busier than ever, so book four to six months ahead for the best hotels and Halong Bay cabins.
- Tet 2027 falls on Saturday February 6; offices close February 4–10, 2027. Flights and trains sell out the week before, while hotels and main sights stay open.
- Saigon's new airport. Long Thanh International Airport targets its first flights from December 24, 2026, and long-haul routes are planned to move there from March 27, 2027. If your trip starts or ends in Saigon next year, check which airport your ticket shows: the transfer to the city is about an hour.
- A free online arrival form (prearrival.immigration.gov.vn) is required at Phu Quoc since June 1, 2026 and is being rolled out nationwide. It is free and not a visa; ignore sites that charge to file it.

What a local operator tells you that a booking site won't
- One guide per region, not one for the whole trip. Vietnam is 1,650 km long and you fly between regions, so a guide who lives in Hanoi, Hoi An or Saigon meets you in each. You get local knowledge and dialect, and you don't pay for a guide's flights and hotel nights.
- Check the guide's card and the company's license. By law, a guide leading international visitors must hold an international tour guide card, and the operator an international tour operator license. Ours is No. 79-0743/2017/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT; here is how to check any company's.
- A "private" Halong Bay cruise usually means a private cabin on a shared boat. The whole boat is yours only on a charter. Lan Ha Bay is quieter than the main Halong route; see Halong vs Lan Ha vs Bai Tu Long.
- At the Cu Chi Tunnels, go to Ben Duoc, not Ben Dinh, if you dislike crowds: it is a little further from Saigon, larger and much quieter. Arrive at opening time to avoid the heat (Cu Chi guide).
- Plan the central coast around the rain, not the calendar. Hue and Hoi An have their typhoon and flood season in October and November, when we route trips via the north and south; see Vietnam weather and temperature by month.

Where our private tours in Vietnam go
Most first trips link three regions. In the north, Hanoi has temples, lakes and the busy street markets of the Old Quarter. A cruise on Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay shows the limestone formations in Vietnam that the country is famous for. Ninh Binh has the same karsts, seen from a rowing boat between rice fields.
In the center, Hue and Hoi An hold some of the country's finest historic sites: the Imperial City, royal tombs and a lantern-lit trading port. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City shows modern Vietnam, and the Mekong Delta is a world of canals and floating markets.

Food tours, cooking classes and what to drink in Vietnam
Food is often the best part of tours in Vietnam. On an evening Hanoi food tour, your guide orders bun cha, banh cuon and grilled skewers at stalls with no English menu. In Hoi An, cooking classes start with a walk through the market to buy the ingredients. In Saigon, our Saigon Street Eats evening goes where locals eat after work.
As for what to drink in Vietnam: strong iced coffee with condensed milk, Hanoi's egg coffee, fresh coconut and sugar-cane juice, and bia hoi, the light draught beer poured on street corners. Your guide will tell you where each one is best.

What is a Vietnam private tour?
A Vietnam private tour is a trip planned only for you and the people you travel with. You have your own guide and driver, you choose the dates, the hotels and the pace, and the itinerary can change on the way. Nobody else joins your vehicle or your guide.
How much do Vietnam private tours cost?
With boutique hotels, a private guide and driver, private tours start from US$1,250 per person for 7–9 days, US$1,850 for 10–12 days, US$3,000 for 14–16 days and US$3,800 for 18–21 days. Luxury hotels, more guests in the group and the travel season change the price; every quote is itemized.
Are private tours in Vietnam worth it?
For most couples, families and older travelers, yes. You skip hotel pick-up loops and fixed group timetables, see historic sites early before the crowds, and your guide can adapt each day to your interests. The extra cost over a group tour is usually smaller than people expect, especially for groups of four or more.
How far ahead should I book a private tour of Vietnam?
Three to six months ahead is ideal, and earlier for Tet (late January or February), Christmas and the peak months of February to April and October to December, when the best hotels and Halong Bay cabins fill up first.
Is it cheaper to book a Vietnam private tour with a local operator?
Usually, yes. Many overseas agencies resell a Vietnamese ground operator and add their own margin, so booking directly with a licensed local operator removes one layer of cost. Booking on arrival works for single day trips, but in the peak months the best hotels and Halong Bay cabins sell out weeks ahead, so a full itinerary is best booked in advance.
How do I know my private guide in Vietnam is licensed?
Under Vietnam's Law on Tourism, a guide leading international visitors must hold an international tour guide card issued by the tourism authority, and the tour company must hold an international tour operator license. Ask your operator for both: a licensed company can give you its license number, which you can look up on the national registry at quanlyluhanh.vn.
When is Tet 2027 and does it affect a private tour?
The first day of Tet 2027 is Saturday February 6, and public offices close from Thursday 4 to Wednesday February 10, 2027. Hotels, resorts and the main sights stay open, but domestic flights and trains sell out in the days before, and many family restaurants close for a few days. A private tour can be planned around it; book early if your dates touch that week.
