Thailand – Getting to know Hua Hin
Hua Hin, the oldest and most traditional of Thai resorts, combines the attractions of a modern holiday destination with the charm of an active fishing port. Just three hours drive from Bangkok and with over five miles of sand, it’s not hard to see why the resort has remained popular for over 70 years – since King Rama VII made it his resort of choice!
Thailand Hua Hin Travel Guide
What to do in Hua Hin
Besides sun-filled days on the beach, there are a wide range of leisure activities to participate in, including golf, kayaking and water skiing.
For the best panoramic sea views walk to the top of Khao Takiab (a.k.a Monkey Mountain because of the large number of monkeys that live on the mount).
A short drive north of Hua Hin, set in beautiful gardens beside the sea, you’ll find the elegant Mrigadayavan Palace. Designed by an Italian architect and built from teak for King Rama VI, this palace is notably distinct from Thailand’s other stately buildings and well worth a visit.
In the early evening head to Hua Hin’s lively night market where you can shop for handicraft souvenirs, sup on chilled Thai beer and tuck into Thai cuisine – particularly seafood.
Looking for a quieter beach?
PRANBURI. Although just 30 minutes to the south of bustling Hua Hin, Pranburi is reminiscent of a Thai beach resort 20 years ago. Tourism is gradually growing and there are a number of boutique hotels and resorts spread along the beach, however development is refreshingly minimal and dining options outside your hotel are a little limited. If you’re looking to escape the tourist trappings of a typical modern beach resort, look no further.
CHA AM. Located 30 minutes north of Hua Hin, Cha Am is far less developed than its well-known neighbour. However it’s still home to an established promenade of shops and restaurants, and is a great option for visitors wishing to avoid the big-resort feel of Hua Hin but still wanting a little evening entertainment.
